EU adopts new gas storage rules

The European Union adopted a new law on Friday to extend gas storage regulations through 2027 and bolster energy security across the bloc.

EU countries will be required to reach 90% of gas storage filling levels by 1 December each year, with flexibility of up to 10% in the case of “difficult conditions,” the European Council, which sets the EU’s political agenda, said on Friday.

Gas filling obligations may be relaxed by an additional 5% in case of “persistent unfavourable market conditions,” and intermediate storage targets will become indicative only to allow for gas purchases “when conditions are most advantageous”.
